So I’ve been trying everything I know in order to get our car to get the best gas mileage possible. I just can’t seem to break 40mpg right now though. Of course I’m hoping to see that change here in the near future. I’ve been working on designing a new chassis and body for our 1999 Toyota Corolla. First it’s an automatic which is just sucking away power so I plan to do a conversion over to a manual transmission, which should help gain a couple more MPG from the car and push it past the 40 mark that has been so elusive. Then the extreme modifications come in. Currently the car weighs in at 3,515lbs without anyone in it, and isn’t the most aerodynamic car ever built. However I am working on a plan to reduce the weight of the car to about 2,500lbs for a nice 1k pound weight loss plan, and decrease the coefficient of drag for the vehicle drastically.

A tubular steel frame allows me to create a very strong, yet light weight frame that won’t flex under load.

A new fiberglass body allows me to make the vehicle aerodynamic yet strong.

Now the last thing I’ve been looking for that has been so elusive is cheap auto insurance. As it turns out it’s not so cheap to get a home built car insured! In fact it’s actually quite expensive. Luckily I found a great place to search for cheap auto insurance online! Which has brought my gas saving experiment along quite nicely. Of course building a car that gets the best gas mileage possible isn’t all about saving money, but it does help in the end especially when your raw materials costs are as high as they are for me right now ;-)
